About the program:

With our Cat’s Corner family growing up, the school has been offering tap dance classes for our younger ones, from age 3 to 12yo.

The program is led by Majiza Philip, tap dancer and choreographer with more than 15 years of experience teaching kids of all ages. More about her below.

Class Descriptions:

A class for the youngest: discovering dance! On the program: jazz warm-up, introduction to tap, creative exploration of movement and rhythm.
The children will be hosted by Suzanne Bruneau. They will have the privilge of being introduced to the dance pedagogy of Suzanne’s mother, the one and only “Miss Swing”, Miss Ethel Bruneau.
The class will be 45min long.

Children aged 3 and 4 will be able to discover music created by their own bodies. Imagine! With every step, their feet make noise. And step by step, with their friends and the music, their march will form a small band!
In a very playful and caring approach, the children will develop a listening ability of their body and their environment. Through small, simple and repetitive sequences, rhythmic and collaborative games, young dancers will learn to follow the rhythm of time, music and life!

Children from 5 to 7 years old will be introduced to tap dance in the jazz tradition. Their feet will compose rhythmic and expressive phrases in cadence and harmony, like a moving drum. What better dance to dialogue with the music and join the orchestra itself? Children will work on their sense of time, by listening to themselves and to others. Tap dancing also trains a sense of balance and proprioceptive finesse by learning to use body weight and control different parts of the foot.

Children from 8 to 12 years old will be introduced to tap dance in the jazz tradition. Their feet will compose rhythmic and expressive phrases in cadence and harmony, like a moving drum. What better dance to interact with the music and be part of the orchestra? Children will work on their sense of time, by listening to themselves and to others. Tap dancing also trains a sense of balance and proprioceptive finesse by learning to use body weight and control different parts of the foot.

Children who have trained with Majiza for a year and over come together in this class to continue their journey with this dance.

MAJIZA PHILIP

Grand child of legendary dancer Ethel Bruneau, Montreal Queen of Tap from Harlem, NY, Majiza was born and raised in Little Burgundy and knows Pointe St Charles inside out.

Majiza has started training with her grand mother at the age of 3, and later with actor Don Jordan. Among her many accomplishments, she and her sister were selected to dance at the Governor General’s Awards. She danced on the stage of Jazz Fest in 1998 with the Big Band Vic Vogel, following which she got a role at Nathalie Simard’s Décibel show. Between 2009 and 2013, she was a choreographer at Segal Centre for performing arts.

Majiza excels in the art of teaching like a second nature. She’s shared her love for tap in numerous schools: the Segal Center “Broadway Kids” after school program, the Cameron dance school, the Sport-Study program at Massey-Vanier high school in Cowansville, at the Académie de danse de Montréal and various elementary schools on the Island of Montreal. We feel extremely lucky to have her among us at Cat’s Corner Swing Dance School.

Majiza is able to connect with each of her students, kids and adults, and see every ones’ own qualities and personalities. She guides her classes with the awareness of each student’s specific needs while creating a very friendly and supportive atmosphere. She manages to bring together a sense of rigour with kindness and real fun! She’s truly a gem of a teacher!
