Class descriptions

  • We teach the basics of partner dancing to swinging jazz and blues music. The best way to get started is to join a Friday night intro class. It’s the start of a party, and we’ll teach you some basic steps to use throughout the evening.

The class is one-hour long, followed by a social dance that you are highly encouraged to stay for. If you are keen to learn more, we have an eight-week series, which is the best way to get immersed and learn a variety of swing dances.

  • This eight-week session is a logical follow-up to your first Friday night intro-to-swing. You will get to know the music and learn several basic steps (Lindy Hop, Charleston, Jig Walk, Swing Walk, …).

You will learn useful tips for having fun at social dances (how to invite people to dance, paying attention to the space around you, …).

You will have the choice of two classes during the week, plus the bonus of the Friday intro class*. Yes, that means that you can dance up to three times a week! Take advantage of this incredible offer.

    No prerequisite. No partner required.

A new session starts every four weeks, or around the beginning of each month.

*excludes the monthly live music Fridays

  • An introduction to the basics of tap dancing. You will learn the basic, essential steps such as the toe, heel, shuffle, hop, flap, …

Spend a few weeks in this class to familiarize yourself with tap dancing and the sound and feel of tap shoes.

A minimum of three months is the prerequisite for registering for Tap 1, after your teachers’ evaluation.

We can lend you tap shoes, depending on shoe size availability.

The course is available as a drop-in or with a monthly subscription.

  • An introduction to Blues dances. Open to all.

If you have no prior experience with partner dancing, we recommend starting with the Intro to Swing drop-in class or the eight-week Intro Session.

  • An introduction to Balboa. Open to all.

If you have no prior experience with partner dancing, we recommend starting with the Intro to swing drop-in class or the eight-week Intro Session.

Foundations

  • The foundations of Lindy Hop: the equivalent of our old Swing 1 to 3 classes. You’ve gotten  acquainted with partner dancing, and you’ve learned a few basic steps. We now invite you to broaden your vocabulary by getting to know the Lindy Hop, the mother of all swing dances!

You can join this class at any time and stay as long as you need to feel comfortable with your foundations. This is the prerequisite for the Lindy Hop Open classes. Please ask your teachers for feedback on your level. The minimum recommended time is four months.

  • Have you dabbled in Balboa by taking an intro lesson? Do you want to learn more about this exciting and subtle dance? Learn to dance to faster swing music all night, explore fancy footwork, and explore close partner dancing.

This class is for you who are new to Balboa or want a refresher of the foundations.

You can join this class at any time and take it as long as you wish. Each month will focus on a Balboa basic. This is the prerequisite for the Open Balboa class.

    Slippery shoes recommended.

  • Have you been attracted to the different forms of Blues and done an intro lesson? Do you want to learn more about this dance and its many varied qualities? Learn how to dance the night away to Blues music and become part of a community of enthusiasts.

This course is aimed at dancers who  have already done partner dancing and want to learn a new dance.

You can join this class at any time and take it as long as you wish.

  • The Tap 1 course solidifies tap dancing rudiments acquired in the introductory course. This is the first practice of the foundations of the rhythmic language specific to this dance.

You can join this course after a teachers’ evaluation and take it for a year. This is the prerequisite for the Tap 2 course, according to the personalized advice of your teachers.

Prerequisite: a few months of Intro to Tap

Intermediate

  • Once the basics are learned in the Foundations class, Lindy Open is where we all come together, no matter how many years of dancing we have.

Vocabulary, improvisation skills, musical understanding and partnering technique continue to be at the heart of our practice.

You can join this class at any time and take it as long as you wish. The content will be adapted to the needs of the dancers present.

For a change of pace and learning style, you can combine or alternate this course with Charleston, Solo Jazz and any of our other classes.

    Prerequisite: Lindy Foundations or equivalent

  • Once you’re comfortable with the three basics of the Balboa Foundations course, Balboa Open is where you can expand your knowledge and hone your craft through inspiration, improvisation, and partnership. This course will be the best environment to practice self-expression, negotiation, listening, and adaptation.

You can join this class at any time and take it as long as you wish. Each month’s content will be different. Slippery shoes recommended.

Prerequisite: 3-6 months of Balboa Foundations

  • The Tap 2 class continues from the previous classes with the introduction of some new steps and combos. We begin to feel more comfortable with conversing  with rhythms, with time steps, pull backs, other classic steps, and with improvisation.

You can join this course after your teachers’ evaluation  and take it for a few months until you feel comfortable with your practice.

    Prerequisite: Tap 1

Advanced

  • The title says it all. This course is here to challenge you. Whether it’s the physical pace, discipline, or artistic concepts, you’ll have something to work on. Focus will be on improvisation, communication, sense of style, and individual and reciprocal expression, all of these part of the cultural practice of jazz!

You can join this class at any time and take it  as long as you like.

    Prerequisite: Lindy Open

  • Refine your Balboa dancing. Increase your range and subtlety as you bring your skills to the next level.

Audition required with the teachers. This class is for dancers with solid Balboa experience.

You can join this class at any time and take it as long as you wish.

  • The Tap 3 class continues from the previous courses with the integration of new steps, combos and faster tempos. Improvisation becomes more fluid, and choreographies will expand your limits.

You can register for this course after the teachers’ evaluation.

    Prerequisite: Tap 2 or equivalent

Open

  • Leah and Monica from Afrodojo will offer an Introduction to Azonto, a street dance style from Ghana. The class is open and accessible for everyone, whether you’ve danced Azonto before or you’re just starting out.

You’ll go over the foundation, technique, and groove of the style, and also learn about history and cultural context so you get a sense of where it comes from.

Expect an immersive and dynamic experience in learning the style.

  • Solo Jazz is an essential aspect of the vernacular and social culture and tradition. By learning its language, jazz also invites us to express who we are and how we feel. Dancing means finding and defining one’s own voice to fully participate in the community. That's why Solo Jazz is a feature of every partnered dance class.

This Solo Jazz & Blues class is designed to give you the opportunity to practice your body awareness, your listening skills and your improvisational finesse, to develop your confidence and your own style, and to deepen your understanding of the music and culture from which these dances are born.

This is an Open-level class. Content will be adapted to meet the needs of all dancers present.

    Prerequisite: Lindy Foundations or equivalent

  • Learn or review the dance routines that are well known in the Swing, Tap and Blues communities.

During a social dance evening, a routine could be announced that you can join in.

The class content will advance at the pace of the participants present. Some classes will push the limits of your abilities. Challenge yourself!
