Beginners

Starting your journey

We have been teaching beginners for over 25 years !

Our classes are inclusive and fun and designed to give you what you need to dance at a social dance, whether on Friday nights at Cat’s Corner or anywhere in the world you might find jazz, swing and blues music.

No partner required. Come alone or with friends. You can dance with anyone in the class or stick with the person you came with.

No experience needed. We’ll show you the basics of several types of swing dances. Even those with two left feet will feel the groove!

Bring clean indoor shoes and wear whatever you like. People may dress their best on live music nights, but there is no dress code.

Anyone can dance with anyone, you have the choice to accept or decline a dance. And we even give you the chance to learn both roles!

Friday nights

Intro to swing

We teach the basics of partner dances done to jazz, swing and blues music.

The best way to get started is to join a Friday night intro class. It’s the start of a party, and we’ll teach you some basic steps to use throughout the evening.

The class is an hour long, followed by a social dance that you are highly encouraged to stay for. If you are keen to learn more, we have an 8-week series that is the best way to get immersed and learn a variety of swing dances.

$20 per person.
On monthly live music nights, entrance is $25

Dances we teach beginners

Beginners at Cat’s Corner learn a variety of rhythms and dances that you’ll see on the social dance floor. They can be mixed together throughout a song, danced next to people doing other things, all on the same tune. If it fits with the music, it belongs!

Each class focuses on a different basic rhythm, some of which you see in this clip:

  • Lindy Hop (8 count)

  • Jig Walk (6 count)

  • Swing walk

  • Charleston

8-week beginner session

Classes up to 3 times per week!

The best way to get immersed in swing dance in a short 2-month period is to join our beginner series. Classes are offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays

You can come as often or as little as you like. Each class focuses on a different basic rhythm of swing dance, so if you miss a class you won’t be far behind.

New participants are welcome at the start of each month.

We recommend coming regularly on Mondays or Wednesdays so you meet the same teachers and class mates, and consider the Friday lesson + social dance as a bonus.

$175 per person, which represents a discount of more than 60% on the real price! Check out our prices and policies to learn more about pricing.
