Teacher Bios

Ann & Ryan

Ryan Calloway and Ann Mony  teach Lindy Hop, Solo Jazz, and Charleston from their home base of San Francisco, California. Their classes balance creativity exercises with a systematic approach to technique, with the ultimate goal of high-quality, fun social dances for all their students. They are both musically-inclined people who understand the relationship between music and dance, and they care deeply about swing dancing as a unique mode of self-expression.

Ryan Calloway

Ryan Calloway shines on the dance floor. His enthusiasm, buoyant rhythm and boundless creativity make him one of San Francisco’s best known Lindy Hop leaders. Ryan’s goal as a teacher is to inspire his students to find their own creativity. With an open and warm style, he welcomes individuals to not only learn the traditions of Vintage Jazz Dance, but to add to it as well.

Ann Mony

Ann Mony strives to make every dance a unique and memorable one. Known for her playful style and the joy that she exudes while dancing, she travels as often as she can to share her love of lindy hop through classes, competitions, performances, and social dances. She is committed to preserving the improvisational link between lindy hop and jazz, empowering followers, and celebrating the cultural wealth of vernacular jazz dances.

Travis Knights

Travis Knights is a Montreal native and a pride protégé of Ethel Bruneau since age 10. First class entertainer, outstanding tap dancer, storyteller extraordinaire and preacher of the rhythm business, he’s traveled the world to share his passion and collaborate with the most talented feet. Tap dance is a marriage between music and dance.  Dancers are tasked with creating music and dancing to it simultaneously.  Travis’ understanding of jazz music runs deep to his core.

He has performed with Tap Dogs, Savion Glover, and Gregory Hines.  Knights speaks the music of swing fluidly. He represented our common culture like a royal storm last July at the Montreal Swing Riot famous Invitational Battle. We are finally bringing him to Cat’s Corner for an intensive workshop on jazz language for jazz dancers. No taps required. This will be an immersion into the dance as music and the music as dance, through the guidance of a tap dancer.  Lace up your dancing shoes, because we’re about to swing hard.

Track Descriptions

Intermediate

You’ve completed at the minimum swing 4 or its equivalent and are able to mix six count, eight count and charleston basics. You’re comfortable with the swingout and lindy circle, and working on expanding your vocabulary and improving your technique. You’re starting to work on your connection to your partners and the music and you’re hoping to have some new ideas and concepts to take back home with you by the end of the weekend.

Advanced

You have been dancing for a few years now and you feel confident on the social dance floor. You can do everything mentioned in the other level description and you are fluent in way more than just the basics of Lindy and Charleston. You assimilate new material quickly, can dance to songs of various tempos and have begun to create your own moves or variations. You’re working or your own voice in the dance and are starting to develop your own preferences in terms of style, music, and aesthetics. You’re interested in classes that concentrate on some of the finer points of the dance. You’ve attended other workshops before, are fairly confident in your abilities and are comfortable performing or auditioning.

Dance Evenings

Join us for two dance evenings during the workshop, Friday and Saturday night. Saturday night will feature live music from Emily Estrella & Friends, with special guest Ryan Calloway on clarinet. There will be a show and demo by Travis Knights, Ann Mony, Ryan Calloway, as well as many surprises throughout the evening.
