Online classes for November

The online classes are going well so we invite you to join us for another round of zoom classes in November! It feels good to move your body to jazz music, to greet familiar faces once a week, to learn, get feedback and to have fun!

Here is what some of the participants from the October session had to say:

“When our lindy hop classes was moved on line due to the second wave, we hesitated about continuing but we are very glad that we did it! The classes with Phil and Megan allow us to have fun from our living room, to stay active despite the isolation and do something besides watching Netflix all the time 😉 It’s a small group so we get lots of personal feedback and we have been getting better while learning more about the history of lindy hop.”

– Floriane

“I found it much more informative and fun that I would have imagined. I can’t get over the fact that little adjustments make such a big difference. The dance is even more fun! For example, I can do more swingouts without getting dizzy. And we’re learning how to dance faster. Phil and Megan take the time to watch and give us feedback. They are always positive and give us energy. The songs chosen to highlight one artist per week are helping us to recognize them. Isabelle and I will be registering for the next session. I thought there may be some technical challenges but everything is going very well!”

– Jean-François

But celebrations are important and as we have said before, Cat’s Corner is about people not place, so let’s get together!

Remember getting dressed up for a great night? Lets do it! Photo submissions for best dressed (as yourself or in halloween costume) and prizes to be won! Cherry on the cake, Emily Estrella & Peter Mika will treat us with their very special duet during the night.

Covid-cautious swing dancing

[Update October 5th, 2020: October session classes are moving online. 4 weeks, small groups, individual attention, lots of jazz and culture sharing!]

As Montreal enters the red zone due to a high number of covid-19 cases, we are closely monitoring the government regulations and recommendations for dance and fitness activities.

We have been slow to reopen our studio as we wanted to do it in a way that felt safe for everyone. We have decided that while we will have markers on the floor to maintain 2 meters distance, we will also require everyone to wear masks 100% of the time while in the studio. This goes beyond what most indoor fitness activities are doing right now but for us this is what feels like a responsible choice in a global pandemic.

Our class sizes are very small, there will be no drop ins so that we have contact information for each participant, all registration will be online to limit transactions at the studio and we will produce class recaps for anyone who has to stay home due to sickness, however mild it may be. Please take  the time to read the full details of our cover class policies and let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We will provide further updates as the situation changes over the coming days and weeks.

COVID-19: Classes and Dances Cancelled

Dear dancers,
It is with heavy hearts and love for our community that we announce we are cancelling all classes and social dances for the next two weeks starting today.

Our provincial and local governments have chosen to be very proactive by closing schools, libraries, daycares and encouraging people to work from home. The measures may seem extreme given the number of cases we currently have but we have plenty of evidence from other regions that predict the future for us and the time to act is now.
The official recommendation is to cancel events larger than 250 people, but that is to maintain a safe distance even in groups. Dancing puts us in such close proximity that we no longer feel it is responsible to host classes and dances. The situation is changing rapidly and we have decided that it’s time to take action for our collective health.

We are asking for your support and understanding as we navigate this global pandemic. We will hold your registrations on file and welcome you back to your current classes when we are able to resume normal activities. This will be a difficult time for all of us. Musicians, dancers, artists, freelancers, restaurants, theatres and dance studios will be carrying a heavy financial burden in the coming weeks and months. If you are able to, we encourage you to continue to support us and we will find ways to support you.

We have some great ideas for online classes, solo practice, online meet-ups and more. If you have special requests or ideas please share them with us!

We know how important dance is to all of you and we will do everything we can to keep you moving in the coming weeks. We also know that your community, your friends and your soon-to-be-friends are found at Cat’s Corner and we are excited to get creative about staying in touch. Please reach out, your mental health is important now too. You are not alone, we are all in this together.

With love,
Meghan & Anaïs

For reference, here is an article that we found useful about a week ago, and here is one that is much more relevant today. The situation is changing rapidly and we are doing our best. Thank you for understanding.
