The Cat's Corner staff
Fred, Cat's Corner StaffFred is the founder of Cat's Corner and is the most experienced Lindy Hop teacher in Montreal, having taught Lindy Hop continuously since September of 1998. To date he has spread the joy of Swing to several hundred students, and is credited with bringing Lindy Hop into the mainstream in Montreal. In 2001 Fred was the producer of the Montreal International Swing Dance Festival, Canada's first swing dance camp. A certified Lindy Hop nut, Fred has traveled near and far in order to study with the masters in the U.S. and abroad. (Here are some pictures of Fred and his teachers.) As a result, Fred's continually evolving style is a synthesis of the best characteristics he has encountered; a blend of modern Savoy and left coast styling.
Jasmine, Cat's Corner StaffJasmine first experimented with swing back in 1999, but really jumped into it in 2001. She eagerly worked as Cat's Corner's admin staff and began teaching soon thereafter. The most important aspect of social dancing for her is definitely being playful! She has experimented with jazz ballet, contemporary dance and hip-hop and loves to push the limits of lindy, blues, bal, shag and west-coast. When in the DJ booth, fun and funky are her two utmost concerns. She has helped organize workshops in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa, and has travelled throughout North America to satisfy her thirst for Lindy Hop. Off the dance floor, Jasmine is sporadically persuing her B.F.A..
Sara Sara fell in love with swing dancing in 2001. She has taken numerous classes at Cat's Corner both as a follower and a leader. She has attended and continues to attend numerous workshops and camps in North America in order to keep in touch with different styles and improve her dancing and teaching. When she is not working on her dancing or teaching classes, she is a student at the Université de Montréal.
Carl, Cat's Corner Staff Alain started dancing in 2000 at Arthur Murray's, mainly in latin dances (Salsa, Mambo, Cha-cha,...). About a year later, he was introduced to the wonderful world of Swing, and completely fell in love with it. Since then, he has attended multiple workshops, as well as camps, exchanges, and competitions. His love for smooth-style lindy hop is only surpassed by his affection to the swing community and his friendliness among new swing dancers. He is always ready to dance, and is extremely passionate about the swing scene. When he is not dancing, Alain works as a technical analyst manager for a billing services company (Amdocs).
Ann, Cat's Corner Staff Ann started swing dancing at Cat’s Corner in 2002 and hasn’t stopped since; in fact, she’s gaining momentum! Dancers from Toronto to Paris will recognize her smiling face (under her ever-changing hair) from the numerous workshops and camps she has attended. Ever eager to absorb as much information as she can, she will follow any style you lead, though Savoy-style lindy hop will always have a special place in her heart. She is happy to be a part of the Cat’s Corner team, whose emphasis on the dynamics of social dancing forms the basis for her love of lindy hop.
Carl, Cat's Corner Staff Carl went to university in Rochester, NY starting in the fall of 2001, and who would have thought that he'd get so caught up in all this dancing stuff and end up in Montreal teaching at Cat's Corner? Carl fell in love with Lindy Hop and hasn't looked back. He's traveled all over the U.S. and Canada to dance and has even gone as far as Paris, competing here and there. Before coming to Montreal he taught in Rochester, NY and in Maine where he grew up. In reality, Carl just loves all forms of movement, studying Tae Kwon Do in his youth, and has recently fallen in love with Capoeira Angola here in Montreal. He also is one of Cat's Corner's two Hip Hop experts, focusing mainly on popping and waving, interjecting some Electronica dancing as well. Simply put, he just loves to dance.
Christina, Cat's Corner Staff Christina began her dancing career in the spring of 2002 with East Coast, as most people do, and quickly became an avid Jive dancer. It was later that year, while living in Toronto, that she began to become interested in and develop her Lindy Hop. She has never turned back since. Another strong influence in Christina's funky & eclectic style was several months of Reggae dancing in Costa Rica. Nowadays Christina finds that she learns most through her students while teaching at Cat's Corner.
Richard, Cat's Corner Staff Richard Richard is a home grown Cats Corner dancer, taking his first triple steps in 2003. Once bitten he launched into learning all he could, going to a workshop after 2 weeks, and a dance camp after 2 months. Since then, he has been charging around the world attending camps and workshops gallore. If you want to find out about a famous teacher, this is probably the best guy to ask; he's even brought some back to Montréal! Richard is glad to be able to give back to the swing community through teaching, DJ'ing and organizing workshops. Having taught at 2 other schools, he is delighted to have been brought into the high teaching excellence of the Cats Corner school. With a special interest in bringing Balboa to Montréal, he also loves pure lindy, blues, and charleston. Focusing on social dancing, and always improving, each dance makes him just a little happier!
Jenn, Cat's Corner Staff Jenn is thrilled to be Cats Corner's new Volunteer Coordinator. She walked in to a swing dance event one night in 1999, and has held on tight to this slice of heaven ever since. Over the years, she has taken every class offered by Cats Corner at least once, and loves to travel across the border for workshops and exchanges.
Jean-François, Cat's Corner StaffJean-François My first contact with swing was hearing “Swing the Mood” by Jive Bunny and the Mastermixers when I was 9 or 10 years old. Admittedly, it was more Rock and Roll than swing, but it drew me into authentic swing music. However, it was only a decade later that I finally took my first swing classes. And I have to say, even though I’m a late bloomer, it’s never too late to start.
